Background of the district administration

Until 1765, there were a total of 1365 square miles area under Jessore Yusufpur and Syedpur zamindari. This part was included in Jessore district, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Khulna districts and partial area of ​​24 Parganas. Later, the boundary of Jessore was changed to a separate and full district. Jessore district was re-organized in 1786 by Jessore (Greater Jessore district), Faridpur, east of the Ikhamati river, with part of 24 Parganas district. A collector and district magistrate were appointed for that area. In 1793 Bhusna, Nawapara and Kushtia were included in Jessore district. In 1794, some parts of 24 Parganas were included in Nadia district and the western boundary of Jessore district was fixed at Jhikargachha. Faridpur was separated from Jessore in 1814. Pangsha, Kushtia, Madhupur and Khokha were included in Pabna district in 1928. In 1860-61, separate subdivisions were formed in the context of the uprisings of Khulna, Jhinda, Magura, Narail and Jessore Sadar as headquarters. In 1861, Kachua Thana was included in Jessore from Bakerganj. Khulna and Bagerhat were separated from Jessore district in 1882. In 1883, the Bongaon Bahakuma was included in Jessore district. Headquarter of Jessore district was first established in Murli. Later, in 1790, headquarters was established in the present location. Warren Hastings appointed a collector on experimental basis to recover the maximum revenue from 1772 to 1774, his name was Mr. Samuel Charter. The person employed was entitled to collector, district magistrate, and civil court. In 1774 the Provincial Councilors became dissolved by the post of Collector. One person used to work as judge and magistrate. In 1781, Tilman appointed Henkil as judge and magistrate in Jessore district. In 1786 Jessore collector was established and Henkill was the first collector. Calcutta was the revenue management headquarters of all the eastern areas before taking responsibility for Tilman. Tilman proposed to set up a collectorate in Jessore to make revenue management and the company accepted it. Until the administrative separation of 1779, the collector used all the powers including revenue collection. In 1793, the power of judge and magistrate was separated from the power of the Collector. Lord Cornwallis abolishes the judicial power of "Dargo" and gives magistrates the ability to judge less important criminal cases. "Court of Circuit" was constituted for the trial of important criminal cases and "Nizami" was terminated by the abolition of "Nazim" during the Nawabi period. Several police stations of the district were established, and the post of Judge and Munseed was created at district level 1781-1789 Tillman Henkill served as the judge of both the civil and criminal courts until the court. He was the Police Department's controller and Cornwallis As deputy commissioner, the district magistrate coordinated and supervised the activities of all the districts. He was the president of the office of the then district board. Additional deputy commissioner (overall), additional district magistrate was appointed for the assistance of the additional deputy commissioner (revenue) and judicial activities / law and order for the co-operation of additional deputy commissioner (overall), for the cooperation of the deputy commissioner for his general administration. Later, another post was named Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and Development).
